On June 9, 2025, the container vessel MV Wan Hai 503 (Singapore), en route from Colombo to Mumbai, suddenly experienced an explosion below deck, causing a massive fire and resulting in 20–50 containers falling into the sea off the coast of Kerala, India.

The vessel was reportedly carrying dangerous goods, including electric vehicles (EVs), raising concerns about marine pollution and disruption to the South Asia – Middle East shipping route.

Among the 22 crew members, 18 crew rescued, 4 still missing. Nearby vessels ONE Marvel and MSC Ambra assisted in rescue. Firefighting efforts ongoing.

This incident serves as a serious warning about the risks in maritime transport, especially with dangerous goods (DGs) – where proper declaration, packing, and stowage are essential for safety.
